Update: March 19, 2026

The certification hearing, where the Court will decide whether this action can proceed as a class action, is scheduled for October 4-29, 2027, at the Vancouver Law Courts at 800 Smithe Street. Any jurisdiction challenges raised by the defendants will also be addressed at the certification hearing.

Update: August 30, 2024

Since filing the claim, additional Provincial/Territorial Member Organizations have been named as defendants: Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories and Yukon. At this time, Gymnastics Canada and the Provincial/Territorial Member Organizations have retained lawyers, and we have been assigned a case management judge.

Fédération de Gymnastique du Québec brought an application challenging the jurisdiction of the British Columbia Supreme Court to hear the matter. The application, which we opposed, was heard over two days on June 19-20, 2024. Once the Court releases its decision, it will be posted to the website.

Dates for hearing of plaintiff’s certification application have not been yet set.

Proposed Action:

The Defendants are the major governing bodies of gymnastics in Canada. The claim alleges that the Defendants caused or contributed to the abuse of gymnasts by creating a culture and an environment where the abuse could occur, and failing to take appropriate steps to protect the athletes in their care and control, many of whom were children when the abuse took place.
